Early writers usually associated Ancient Libya with Phut, who was believed to be the founder of Libya and referred to its populace as Phutites or Phoutes to honor himself. It is located in a country of North Africa named Maghreb. With the Libyan Desert covering most of the country along with the Sahara Desert, it is considered one of the most barren places to live. Aside from having scattered cases around the country that includes Ghadames and Kufra, it can also boast of having the famous Mediterranean coast.
The climate is generally hot and dry yet the northern area has the much more tolerable Mediterranean climate. This kind of climate and dry land made agriculture difficult pushing Libya to import a large portion of its food.
Apart from being the 17th largest among the nations in the world by area, Libya also has 10th largest oil reserves in the world and is the 17th highest producer of petroleum. Because of its abundant oil reserves and low population, it had the highest HDI and 4th highest GDP per capita in Africa in 2009.
2011 Crisis in Libya: Nation of Phut
Libya is known for its abundant oil and natural gas making it the richest country in Africa economically. But unemployment still creates a problem in this nation also known for being strict in approving tourist visas.
In early 2011, the ongoing Libya civil war erupted between the loyalists of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi and the activists wanting to oust him. Gaddafi has strictly and unpredictably ruled Libya for more than 40 years. The opposition is crying for a multi-party democratic government and the reestablishment of the 1952 Constitution.
The civil war has resulted in two separate units declaring to be the country’s official government. One is the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya based in Tripoli led by Gaddafi that rules most of the western part. While the eastern part of the country is under the National Transitional Council based in Benghazi composed of people opposing Gaddafi with its leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil.
