Scythians and Cimmerians

According to scholars, the Scythians and Cimmerians were identified with a large population of the Lost Israelites tribes that were once in exile. They are located on the Bible Timeline Chart with History during 200 BC. There are accounts from the Assyrians that the Cimmerians were partly Israelite.

The Cimmerians, in particular, were a group of Indo-Europeans that lived in the northern part of Caucasus and the Azov Sea, about 1300 BC. By the 8th century BC, the Scythians drove them southward and into Anatolia. The Cimmerians were considered Iranians while others referred to them as Thracians.

After they had left the Pontic steppe, these people decided to head off to Anatolia and succeeded in conquering Phrygia in the years 696 to 695 BC. They reached the pinnacle of their success when they took over Sardis, Lydia‘s capital, in 652 BC. However, they quickly reached their decline, specifically when they were defeated by the Alyattes between the years 637 and 626 BC. After their defeat, there was a lack of information about this group of people, although there were assumptions that they remained in Cappadocia.

There were minimal details in terms of the origin of this tribe. Some possibilities are that the Cimmerians had some relations with the Thracians or Iranians. Historians claim that these people may have been under the rule of an elite Iranian background.

Herodotus, a Greek historian, noted that the Cimmerians once lived in the regions on the north coast of the Black Sea and Caucasus. These places are nearby modern-day Russia and Ukraine. However, Renate Rolle, an archaeologist, claimed that there was an absence of evidence that the Cimmerians settled in the southern portion of Russia.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, most scholars accepted the accounts of Herodotus in terms of the origin of the Cimmerians. However, Sir Henry Layard had different claims about this tribe. His studies opened up new sources that are centuries older than what were stated by Herodotus. In the Assyrian records, the Cimmerians were situated in a kingdom that was not distant from Urartu. This was the Iron Age Kingdom, which was located around Armenian’s highland called Lake Van, a place in the southern part of Caucasus.

The Israelites were brought to the center portion of Assyria. Eventually, warriors of Israelite and Syrian descent became a part of the Assyrian armies. They also gained influence and power, and they were taken to Mannae for training. Mannae was among the places were the Cimmerians were believed to have settled.

Historically, Mannae became the center of the Scythian tribe. These people were one with the Cimmerians, and the two tribes even lived and functioned in the similar geographical zones. In fact, the names of these two groups of people have become rather interchangeable in most Assyrian books and historical sources.

  1. Thanks for good info as always- just some thoughts about Cimmerians like Scythians and Celts are a general cover name for a grouping of similar looking tribes as described by writers-its very confusing i know–In my opinion I just want to point out that the Japheth tribes-Gomer,Askenazi,Togarmah,Riphath-are also described as ‘gimerai-cimmerians’-clearly this set of tribes are NOT (Semites)Hebrews-as Abraham wasn’t even born then–so to mention as some modern day so called Jews are called BY the same name–these were the German roots names, also Irish, welsh, and Turkish..The Madai were also ‘Scythian’ -Iran,India because their is a lot of this on the web –oh we’re ALL Jewish lost tribes-and clearly UK/ Europeans Celts /Germanic’s weren’t ALL SO..thankfully–the British Israelite thing isn’t totally correct–anyway letting off steam–thanks for listening..

    1. abraham wasn’t the first jew…the first jew was yehuda (judah) yeshiva (jesus) came to seek the lost tribes of the house of Israel

    2. Nichola, (cool name, btw)
I wanted to know what year you are dating for Abraham’s birth, I ask because I have found different dates.
Could you explain what you mean by “so-called Jews”
Also what you mean about the German roots names, also Irish, Welsh and Turkish.
Do you mean Jewish lost tribes (Rehoboam’s section of the nation called Judah, whose inhabitants were Jews) or the 10 lost tribes of Israel (the top part of the nation taken by Jeroboam; who were carried off by the Assyrians in the 8th century B.C.)
I wasn’t aware that the Jewish tribes had been lost, they stayed in Judea (Judah) until 70 A.D. when many were killed or taken by the Romans to Rome, and 136 A.D. at the end of the Bar Kokhba Revolt when many Jewish towns were sieged, many starved, were killed or enslaved by the Romans. Many fled through Anatolia (Turkey) and entered Europe, although some did stay in the Arabian Peninsula.
I know that there were some Jews who lost their heritage because it wasn’t preserved for them by their parents. I know that there were some Jews who chose to convert to Christianity when they were given the options to convert, die or leave (especially during the Spanish Inquisition)
I’m not aware of the British Israelite thing, so I don’t have any idea of why it isn’t totally correct and why that is a good thing.
Thanks for answering, I always learn so much from these types of forums.

      1. Abraham was absolutely born before any records of cimmerians and Scythians , they appeared exactly when the tribes were taken into exile. The tribes were seperated and placed in different locations. They all became different groups and migrated at different times.

  2. Maday is not Scythians they are not from magog they are from maday who married a daughter of shem producing the mitanni and medes. Gomer should be hittites and cimmerians are from tiras

  3. Genesis 10:2
The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

  4. Understanding the tribe of Dan helps in the confusing tale of the lost tribes migrations, though only in Europe.
Although the tribe maintained its name, there wa a strong admixture of Cimmerians and others,
As an aside, the Cimmerian/celts wet as far as Wales, and are preserved in our language – we call ourselves the Cymru.
The migration of the Scythians, as they were known, can be traced right across Europe. Dan is spelt ‘Dn’ in Hebrew, so any vowel can be inserted, as in my own name Donnelly. Hence we see rivers such as Dniepr, Dniester Don and Daube. It was in the basin of the Danube that they became known as Celts. This may have been the name of another grouping of Israelites of that name, because they were all on intimate terms. they took over the area now known ad Danmark, and when they got to Ireland found Danites from the Egyptian exodus who has fled from there by sea and after Troy, Sparta possibly Rome the founded the kingdom of Milesia in Spain, whence they came to Ireland.
When the Danes asked them who they were the replied “The tuatha Danaan’
    ie the chidren of Dan
Hope this adds to the debate..

    1. Thats right. I studied this as i was doing genealogy and found that out my self … abt the tribe of Dan ‘thuatha Danaan‘ the people of Dan .

    2. You just filled in so many gaps in my knowledge thank you. I have been slowly starting to understand this.

  5. This “Sir Henry Layard” guy didn’t get too far from Herodotus locale of these people.
