Ancient Jericho Found

Is it Jericho or not?

You decide after watching this incredible video of an ancient city of the middle east.

Unique to all other archaeological finds, the walls of this city fell outward making a ramp that invaders could come up, leaving a burned city behind.

Teaching Idea: Tobey is better than Fatorams

Remember when Saul decided to go ahead and make a sacrifice to God because he got tired of waiting for the prophet Samuel to show up?  (see 1st Samuel 15)

Samuel said to Saul, “To obey is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1st Samuel 15:22

Here’s a simple idea to permanently mark this idea on the brains of students (adults or children).

Make two batches of cookies – chocolate chip are great of course.  Substitute a half cup of salt for a half cup of sugar in one batch.  Label that batch Fatorams.  And the correctly made batch is labelled Tobeys.

You’re guaranteed that decades from now people will still remember that “to obey is better … than the fat of rams.”

Teaching Idea: Serving Others By Just Being There

A volunteer at Mother Theresa’s home for those dying of AIDS said he felt completely useless since he could do nothing for those dying or for their physical pain.  He could just sit with them.

Mother Theresa said, “What were Mary and the others doing at the foot of the cross?”

Here’s a way to demonstrate how just being there can relieve the suffering of others.

Supplies:  old fashioned clothes pins with springs – one for each class member.

Have each class member use the right hand to hold the clothes pin so it’s open (pressing down on the ends and compressing the spring.)  Tell them not to change hands but to just keep holding it open while you read them a story.

Now read them a nice long inspirational story of service and caring.  When you notice some are starting to look pained pause your reading.

Tell them to keep holding the clothes pin open.  BUT now take the left hand and wrap it around the right hand holding it gently.

left hand holding the right hand holding the clothes pinNotice the relief.  The right hand is still holding the clothes pin and still doing the work of holding it open.  But the left hand gives support just by being there.

You can then finish reading the story. (you might need more than one to be sure they “feel the pain.”)

5 Tips To Jumpstart Your Bible Reading Habit

Ever gotten so busy you suddenly realize it’s been days (weeks?) since you’ve opened your Bible at home for personal study? It can be hard to get started again.  Especially if I’m still overwhelmed with whatever changed my routine in the first place.

Here are five tips I use to get me going again.

  1. Put the Bible in the bathroom. No matter what’s happening in my life I’m going to brush my teeth.  I hold the toothbrush in one hand, the Bible in the other and start reading.
  2. Put the Bible in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator.  As I’m poking through looking for a “quick snack” I’ll realize the best snack would be to feast on the words of God.
  3. Find my Bible on CD or cassette tape (or buy it if you don’t have it already. I bet it’s available for Ipods)  I stick it in the car player all ready to go on my next dash to work or for an errand.  A wonderful way to calm down and remember God is still in his heaven and all is right with the world.
  4. Put a small version in my purse.  I don’t know what a guy would do but that’s the advantage of having a purse.  Next time I’m stuck in a waiting room or long line I pull it out and start reading.
  5. Use my insomnia.  When life’s that busy I’m often wide awake with churning thoughts at 4 AM.  Reading the Bible soothes me back to sleep.

Best of all?  Once I start reading I want to read more and more.  Soon I’ve made it a regular part of my routine again.  Just that bit of jump-start recharges my spiritual batteries enough to keep me returning again and again to the source.

What about you?

How do you restart a Bible reading habit when a sudden change in routine has broken it?

How do you keep up your Bible reading habit when you’re traveling? That’s where I really fall down.

Tip 3: Share it.  Buy the inexpensive ones at Christian bookstores and hand them out or leave them to be found -in the park, on the bus, in a lobby.  Keep one in your car to give away as you are touched by another’s need.

St. Philip

Italian professor Francesco D’Andria said archeologists found the tomb of the biblical figure — one of the 12 original disciples of Jesus — while working on the ruins of a newly-unearthed church, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported Wednesday. “We have been looking for Saint Philip’s tomb for years,” d’Andria told the agency. “We finally found it in the ruins of a church that we excavated a month ago.” The structure of the tomb and the writings on the wall proved it belonged to St. Philip, he added.
