3 Ways to Embrace Christlike Humility During the Holidays

During the Christmas season, as we focus on the birth of Christ, it is easy to draw attention to the humility of that baby…to see all of heaven’s wonder “wrapped in swaddling clothes.”
To read the verses portraying a stable, a manger, barn animals, and straw. Here we have listed a few ways to embrace humility during the holidays with family and friends.

One, remember who loves you.

Jesus didn’t have to stand up for Himself because He trusted His Father. When you are God’s, you don’t have to keep score. You know that you are valued – apart from the opinions of anyone else! When you realize just how much God loves you, you care more about loving Him back than you care about loving yourself.

Two, remember where you are.

This isn’t heaven. Even at Christmastime, you are surrounded by sin, pain, and grief. Let that motivate you to forget yourself and be a blessing to others. This isn’t hell. Just like the story of the infamous Scrooge, there is hope! We can reach out, and if we are the ones hurting, we can find comfort in the humility of our Savior coming down.

Three, remember why you are here.

Jesus came to this earth for a purpose, to give us a glorious gift. In the Philippians 2 passage, it says He humbled Himself to be obedient to the point of death on the cross. We are all here to make a choice…will we choose God, like He chose us? Or will we reject His gift?
We all claim that Christmas is a time of love and giving. Yet, it’s still so easy to get caught up in what we want, instead of looking for ways to simply let go of ourselves and love. Take this time to remember these small but grand reminders during these holidays.

Virtual Engagement With The Bible

Virtual Bible study is going to be outside of the comfort zone for many of us. Here we share some tips on keeping engagement within your groups and how you can show accountability and strength for your support system. We suggest your first online Bible study meeting be less Bible study and more checking-in. It may have been a few weeks since you’ve seen each other face-to-face and this would be the perfect opportunity to present a safe space to reconnect. The first few times you meet, you and your group may be a bit timid as they figure out the features and controls available in the tech tool you’re using. The cross-talking due to technology lag and so forth but we promise, it gets easier!

You all know each other, now it’s just a group call. Since you are limited with in person queues and body language, you will have to be more detailed than usual. The communication has to be on point so everyone stays engaged and at speed with everyone. You can start by sharing links to tutorials on how to use platforms such as Zoom, WebEx, Skype, Google Video, and more. This will help with familiarity. Encourage your crew to show up and express that it will still be as fun. You don’t have to be a tech guru or Bible expert, this is all about remaining connected to one another and keeping the Word alive in your daily lives. Just remember, you already are friends, now it’s just going to be online and everyone can still have a voice. Keep your normal routine if you like or change it up a bit. Set goals/tasks for you and your group to share at the next meeting. Even present fun memes or videos at the beginning to be an icebreaker. More people could potentially be more vulnerable and open to discussion in the virtual world because they won’t feel judged as some may feel in person. This is a great opportunity and a workout for communication skills.

Understanding the environment we are in helps us adapt. Reading the Word and sharing the Bible with friends was a part of your life before and should remain. The way technology is nowadays, it’s almost impossible to avoid it. There are Bible apps, Bible videos on YouTube, Bible blogs, and more. Get connected and keep your Faith. Hold your friends and peers accountable during these unprecedented times. You never know when they are needing someone. Until next time!

How To Study The Bible For Beginners

If you are new to being a Christian or simply new to independent Bible study, it can feel quite overwhelming. After all, the Bible entails over 60 books and some pretty abstract content at first glance.

Don’t get overwhelmed by all the choices and let that be a barrier between you and God.

There are two main approaches to studying the Bible and you can choose either one or both. Whichever suits you best. There is no right or wrong way, the Bible is for YOU.

Exegetical Bible Study

This is reading the Bible verse by verse, understanding the audience of the passage, looking for connecting themes, and exploring the intent of each passage as you read it.

This is called exegesis, or exegetical study, and is commonly accepted as foundational to understanding Scripture. The literal definition of exegesis is to “pull meaning from.” Exegesis extracts meaning from the passage you are reading by studying verses in context and examining the original meaning of the author to his intended audience.

If you’re new to the Bible, in the beginning this will just be reading the Bible itself and either a commentary or study Bible notes to help you learn more about the historical and cultural context of what you’re reading. Along with this method, utilizing the Bible Timeline would be great!

The more you read and the more Biblical knowledge you gain, the more you’ll start to see connections and patterns and relationships between what you are currently reading and other passages for yourself. The Bible Timeline will help you have a visual for those connections. This is a method that becomes more powerful the longer you do it.

Eisegetical Bible Study

This method is reading the Bible and thinking about what a verse means to YOU. This type of study is very different and somewhat contrary to the exegetical study method. Where exegesis is extracting understanding from the verse, eisegesis is introducing your own understanding into a verse or passage.

This happens way more often than you might realize and is a major reason you need to not solely rely on teachers, but understand the Word for yourself so you can recognize the Word of Truth and its importance. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for your own knowledge profit. Remember, there is no right or wrong way, just getting started with baby steps is already a step toward knowing more.

Planning Bible Time While Following the ABT!

If you’re trying to start a new habit or even spruce up the one you have now, we have put together a simple top 3 essential steps to create a joyful bible study for children and adults of all ages.

Pray

Seemingly simple but this is just a simple sitting of silence for a few minutes to gather thoughts and pray on a topic to study that day. Of course, if you have a burning desire or if there is an environmental theme/issue you would like to address or pray about, then do it! This is just a simple “get started.”

Plan Bible Studies

Organizing thoughts and plans on paper helps tremendously! Following along with the Word and the Amazing Bible Timeline can create a better understanding of events and characters in general, however you can also intertwine the two to make it an interactive experience for you and family and friends. You can plan out weekly themes by goals, such as starting with sectioning The Old Testament into weekly breakdowns and discussions. You also don’t have to go in order, you can start with The New Testament then move to the Old. You can even replace a bible study day with reading and discussing a book that teaches about the Word. There are also many resources online that can help keep things interesting, such as Right Now Media which is a streaming library of Bible study videos. There are no rules, but planning a bible study helps organize thoughts and makes daily activities flow easily.

Plan Service Opportunities

This one is always fun and essential to keeping the faith. Getting out yourself or with a group of people to help others is such a divine experience. You can plan a monthly service project of your choice and reach out to facilitators to see how you can get involved. Spreading peace and togetherness makes the world a happier place. Children can do mentoring programs to help spread the Word, parents/adults can go to a local homeless shelter and feed the homeless, families can do arts & crafts for a local St. Judes Hospital, and the list goes on! Finding a way to get involved helps give back to the community and spread peace amongst all people.
