5 Tips To Jumpstart Your Bible Reading Habit

Ever gotten so busy you suddenly realize it’s been days (weeks?) since you’ve opened your Bible at home for personal study? It can be hard to get started again.  Especially if I’m still overwhelmed with whatever changed my routine in the first place.

Here are five tips I use to get me going again.

  1. Put the Bible in the bathroom. No matter what’s happening in my life I’m going to brush my teeth.  I hold the toothbrush in one hand, the Bible in the other and start reading.
  2. Put the Bible in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator.  As I’m poking through looking for a “quick snack” I’ll realize the best snack would be to feast on the words of God.
  3. Find my Bible on CD or cassette tape (or buy it if you don’t have it already. I bet it’s available for Ipods)  I stick it in the car player all ready to go on my next dash to work or for an errand.  A wonderful way to calm down and remember God is still in his heaven and all is right with the world.
  4. Put a small version in my purse.  I don’t know what a guy would do but that’s the advantage of having a purse.  Next time I’m stuck in a waiting room or long line I pull it out and start reading.
  5. Use my insomnia.  When life’s that busy I’m often wide awake with churning thoughts at 4 AM.  Reading the Bible soothes me back to sleep.

Best of all?  Once I start reading I want to read more and more.  Soon I’ve made it a regular part of my routine again.  Just that bit of jump-start recharges my spiritual batteries enough to keep me returning again and again to the source.
