Othniel: God’s Lion

Othniel was referred to as God’s Lion. According to the ancient scriptures, his name was derived from the words “lion” of “God”. Othniel was a person who proved to live up to his given name. He lived during a time when the people of Israel were turning their backs on the Lord by serving Baalim and worshiping in the groves, after the death of Joshua. During that time, the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. He is found on the Amazing Bible Timeline with World History near Joshua’s reign.

Othniel

The people of Israel took the daughters of the non-believers to become their wives; they even gave their own daughters to the sons of these strangers to God and served other gods. The Lord felt burning anger with the people of Israel and sold them to the King of Mesopotamia named Chushanrishathaim. The people served Chushanrishathaim for eight years until they cried out to the Lord for help to save them from oppression. The Lord sent them a savior, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother.

Othniel: Israel’s God-given Deliverer

In the Biblical timeline, when the period came that the people of Israel turned back to God for help against the oppressive regime of the King, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, was sent by God to be their deliverer. Othniel accepted the challenge of being the savior wholeheartedly even if it came with risks. He made war to defeat the regime of Chushanrishathaim, the King of Mesopotamia. The battle began and in the end, Othniel equipped with his bravery and faith in God, defeated the king.

Othniel: The first Judge

After the war, Othniel became a hero in the eyes of the Israelites. Furthermore, he succeeded in reforming them and restoring their fellowship with God. He was selected as Israel’s new leader. He is likewise denoted as the first and best judge. Israel was at peace during the forty years of Othniel’s reign until his death.

Othniel: His Lineage

Othniel was the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. Kenaz had two children named Seraiah and Othniel. Later in his life, Othniel married Acsah, Caleb’s daughter. Their marriage resulted in two sons named Hathath and Meonothai.

Othniel, A Judge in the Bible

Joshua 15:17-18, Judges 1:13. Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, married Acsah, Caleb’s daughter as the price for capturing Kiriath Sepher.

Judges 3:9. The Lord sent Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother to save the people of Israel.

Judges 3:10. Othniel became Israel’s judge and defeated Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram through the Lord’s.

Judges 3:11. Israel had peace for forty years until Othniel son of Kenaz died.

1 Chronicles 4:13. The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah. The sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai.

1 Chronicles 27:15. Heldai the Netophathite, from the family of Othniel, was the twelfth commander who headed 24,000 men in service of the king of Israel.

    1. Yes; it is all there in many “Bibles”. Understand, you must take the time to follow other books; that does require a study of chronicles; and an exhaustive look at the tribes of Israel. They went here, they went there, they went up, they went down; but it is all there. If you were a child; you would not have a clouded mind; but an intriguing puzzle to put togather.
