Kohath is listed as one of Levi’s sons in the Torah and is the ancestor of the Kohathites. In the Bible, he is named as the second son of Levi along with Gershon and Merari, who went to Egypt with Jacob. He is found on the Bible Timeline Poster around 1720 BC His name was thought to indicate majesty, assembly, and instruction and may be connected to the Aramaic word that means obey. Kohath was the son of Levi and Aram’s daughter Milkah. He later became the father of four boys. Namely; Amram of the Amramites, Izhar of the Izharites, Hebron of the Hebronites, and Uzziel of the Uzzielites; and the grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. He is believed to have died at the age of 133 years old.

Kohathites
The Kohathites was a nation who descended from Kohath and was one of the three major nations of the Levites during the ancient Biblical time along with the Gershonites and the Merarites.
They were distributed in the Kingdom of Israel particularly in the South of the Jezreel Valley and at the north of Galilee. In the land of Ephraim such as the cities of Shechem, Gezer, Kibzaim, and Beth-horon. In the nations of Manasseh pointing out the cities of Tanach and Gat Rimon; and in the land of Dan such as the cities of Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Aijalon, and Gath-Rimmon. The Kohathites were the ones charged with maintaining the vessels and religious items in the sanctuary. Such as the Ark of the Covenant, the Menorah, the Table of Shewbread, the altars, the candlestick and utensils, among others.

- Genesis 46:11, Exodus 6:16, Numbers 3:17, 1 Chronicle 6:1, 1 Chronicles 6:16, 1 Chronicles 23:6. Kohath as the son of Levi mentioned in between his two siblings, Gershon and Merari.

- 1 Chronicles 6:70. Half of the territory of Manasseh allotted Aner and Bilaem along with their pasturelands to the Kohathites.
