The Book of Jubilees stated that he inherited four huge lands along the ocean. He was said to be the ancestor of the American Indians and his people were termed the “sea people” by the Greeks. There are various stories concerning his children in different nations. One interesting account was the one written by a Persian historian that says that aside from his son Batawil, Tiras had three daughters named Qarnabil, Bakht, and Arsal the future wives of Cush, Phut, and Canaan. His people worshipped him as the god of thunder named Thor.
Tiras is associated with several nations, the most famous of which was the Thracians of Thrace.
Thracians of Thrace
Thracians originated from an area in modern day Turkey and travelled out west to the lands of Urartu and Armenia. Thracians dwelt in Thrace bordered by the Dinaric Alps in the west, the Greek plateau on the south, and the Black Sea to the east. It is an area of today’s Balkan Peninsula where the Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, East Greece, and West Turkey are standing.
But some Tracian nations went further north up to the Carpathian Mountains and Dniester River, the land named Dacia by the Romans.
Thrace was a perfect location to connect to the lands of Europe and Anatolia particularly the Dardanelles passage going to the north of Troy and Bosphorous located just meters away from Europe and Asia Minor. Ancient Thracian civilizations started and flourished near the riverbanks of the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Ganges, Hindus, and the Danube. The Danube was where the Thraco-Dacian culture was focused.
There were numerous Thracian nations found in different places. The oldest indication of them was when they were mentioned as the conquerors from the north named Tursha during the time of King Merenptah, who ruled Egypt in the 13th century BC. Xerxes managed to mingle with the seven Thracian tribes in his time, namely; Paeti, Ciconians, Bostonians, Sabaeans, Dersaeans, Edonians, and Satrae. All of these nations except Satrae were conquered.
Satrae maintained its freedom and has never been conquered by any other nation. These fearless warriors live in the middle of high mountains amidst the rich forest and towering trees covered with snow.
Thracians were often illustrated as red-haired and blue-eyed individuals. They were the most populous people on earth, and they spread everywhere. They were so populous that their lands were hard to invade until the Roman conquest.
Despite that, they share the same culture, language, and practices. Before the Roman invasion, Thracians used to dwell in open areas. They were clad with “tunic, cloak, cap, and boots”. Their fighters were equipped with shields, spears, and daggers. Their bodies were decorated with tattoos.
They were described as the toughest tribes in Europe. They were the vicious and untamed warriors who lived in the remote mountains of Haimos and Rhodope. Some of them also lived in a much-refined manner mingling peacefully with the other settlers at Aegea and Marmara.
Thracians could have had the potential and capabilities to battle and invade other nations if only they had been united under one ruler. They were trained to combat. They were taught only to fight and rob as they grew up. They traded even their own children as slaves or let them work as mercenaries for other nations.
Thracians were comprised of primitive tribes ruled by different kings who battled against each other. Their Kings also performed the priestly responsibilities among their own colonies. Their religion was focused on fertility, birth, and death. They practised euphoric rituals and human sacrifices.
Thracians were also known for their contribution to music. They were thought to be the ones who started the lyre. And they were experts in playing the pan-pipe that is still played by the Romanians today.
Today, Bulgarians also claim that the Thracians are their ancestors. There are Thracian remnants being excavated around Bulgaria, which include burial tombs. Some of their rituals such as fire dancing ritual is still observed at Strandja.
An excavation at Heraion-Teikhos in Turkey has also exposed the temple of the ancient Thracians.
