Did A Year Used To Last 360 Days?

I believe evidence shows that before and after Noah’s flood for a period of time, the year consisted of 12 thirty day months equalling 360 days exactly.  The chronology of the flood certainly seems to verify this;  It is also evidenced by Deut. 34:8 and 21:13, and Num. 20:29 where mourning for the dead is ordered for a “full Month,” and is carried on for thirty days.  There are also many ancient writings from India, Persia, Babylonia, Assyria etc, whose writings describe the year as having 360 days, 12 thirty day months.  Their writings go on to say that in the seventh century B.C. 5+ additional days were added.   In your knowledge of time and history, can this be confirmed?   God bless you,  Arnold

Seasons of the Year

Hi Arnold : I am not sure if you asking if the cultures of the day used a 360 day calendar or if the earth actually rotated around the sun in 360 days rather than the 365 and 1/4 days it actually takes. If you are asking the first question then yes you are correct.  Many cultures did use a 360-day calendar that led to season creep.  In other words a month that used to be in winter would eventually become a spring month as the decades and centuries progressed because it takes 5 and 1/4 extra days for the earth to rotate around the sun.  Eventually, that extra 5 days was recognized and incorporated into calendar systems.  However, even that was a problem because of that 1/4 day.  Which is why we now have a leap year. And this little tidbit: Leap year was first introduced by King Ptolemy III, Egypt in 238 BC For the short and sweet version of how we got our current calendar, check out the  AD and BC article on our site. Or for a much longer but interesting explanation of calendars (there are about 40 different ones still in use around the world today) try this site  http://astro.nmsu.edu/~lhuber/leaphist.html

  1. Todah

    1. You’re welcome!

    2. How many days does it take Mars to go around the sun? 360 right? Perhaps the chosen people were from that planet originally. I know, crazy right??

Before you dimiss the idea completely you might look at the hebrew name Adam and see the reference to the color of red. The red in the cheeks of an embarrassed man …a lowly man… or perhaps… the dirt God used to form man, was red in color??? For the red soil directly referenced see 127 Adamah.

  2. Since you mentioned Noah I am assuming you are speaking about the biblical calendar? In this case I cannot see that God’s calendar has changed at any time during man’s existence; since he does not change neither is there variableness in him. The Flood text does not say that each month was 30 days long. The Flood was still in evidence after the seventeenth day of the seventh month, so saying that five months is equal to 150 days is incorrect.

    1. Gen. 7:11 says the flood started on the 17th day of the 2nd month. Gen. 8:3,4 say aftet 150 days, on the 17th of the 7th month, the waters decreased, and the arc rested on the mountains of Ararat.

The bible doesn’t bring up in this passage when the waters totally recede off of the land. Also, it says 150 days had transpired over those 5 months.

      1. Yeah, man, but I am not as tall as one of my neighbors. Human height should not change either, if you assert that maxim!

    2. It’s man who does not change (his ego/Sin). God is dynamic and we are made in His image. If nothing/nobody ever changed, there would be no Ten Commandments and no ‘morality’ (we could neither ‘grow in Christ’ nor ‘backslide’). Change is obvious and all encompassing, so to deny it is to lie. Religion is a lie that replaces G-D and the living Word with an idol upon which we cast our worst vanities.

    3. Check Genesis 7:24, it specifies 150 days

      1. Rotation is slowing down. Rate has been measured by JPL and I think the expanding earth theory explains it [ballet dancer brings arms in, spins faster]. I think episodic expansion because of proximity of outer planets exert forces on the earth that are witnessed in days of Noah as well as time of Moses.

  3. The calendar most consistent with Scripture in the Old Testament and can be connected to our current Gregorian calendar is a 364-Day calendar. Only the month and day of the month is given in the Old Testament and the Ancient world prior to 46 BC with the introduction of the Julian solar calendar. On a Hebrew calendar the months of Tevet, Iyar, Elul and Tammuz only have 29 days-no exceptions. If Heshvan 17 is day number 1 of 150 days then Nisan 17 is day number 150 since the month of Tevet always has 29 days. In the New Testament Nisan 14-Passover always falls on April 5 in a non-leap year. In the year 30 AD April 5 falls on a Friday and is the day of the Crucifixion.

  4. There is another possible explanation. Picture an ice skater spinning with arms out wide. When the skater pulls her arms in tight, she speeds up. Now picture the Earth with a massive amount of water in the heavens. According to the Flood account, that water fell from the sky, flooding the earth. Much like the ice skater, the Earth’s rotational speed could have increased slightly, making each day slightly shorter, and making the number of days in a year slightly greater. In effect, mankind’s sin altered the accounting of time itself.

  5. Earth is flat, and 1 year = 360days. Period.

A Year didn’t use to last 360, it DOES last 360days. According to Genesis, God made sun, moon, stars also to let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Problem today is 99% of Christianity is not believing what Bible says, what basically means they dont think its the Word of God, which basically means they think Jesus is a liar.

    Cheers

  6. Hi,
I urge one and all to spend time studying the ‘Hytroplate Theory’ for a detailed study of the wide range of events that unfolded during the time of the flood. This is a fascinating study.
    John

  7. The earth changed because of sin the Father does not.

  8. Gen 1:6  And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
The firmament is the space where birds fly. Water being separated by the firmament implies that there was a lot of water suspended up there. For those who say “impossible,” take a course in Astrophysics. Not enough room here for that. A collision of our sun with a small moon whose density is mostly metallic would reduce the sun’s temperature. That, in turn, would produce a cascade of events, the first of which is the inability to sustain that suspended water above the firmament. So, the water must fall to the surface.
Consequently, the earth has no choice but to spin faster. I did the math, and 5 days +/- 1.5 days is good math for this consequence. That allows for a 360 days year. The math is very favorable. If there is a geologist who still remembers his physics, let him do the math. The Bible is not like Star Trek. It deals with reality…

  9. Lev 19:35, Deut. 25:13-16
    5.25 days = 126 hours
    126 hours is 1/10 of 1260 hours
    52.5 days = 1260 hours (7.5 weeks / 1.75 months)
    24 x 1260 hours = 30240 hours = 1260 days = 42 30 day months = 3.5 (360 day) years, and if measured from the beginning of the 1st day = 180 full weeks.
“their work as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.” Eze 1:16.
ie. geared one ratio to another. The small circumference(s) cycles turning in exacting and unchanging ratio to the larger cycles.

The 5.25 day, the 7 day, the 15 day, the 17.5 day and the 52.5 day cycles (as well as any others) are precise to the last second, over ANY period of time.

    Thus 15 full weeks = 105 days = 2520 hours = 151,200 minutes = 9,072,000 seconds = 3.5 months x 24
    = 360 weeks = 84 months = 7 full years =2520 days = 60,480 hours = 3,628,800 minutes = 217,728,000 seconds.
Every day equal. Every week equal. Every month equal. Every year equal. Nothing added, nothing omitted. Not one more, not one less, Not a second.

There is also a ‘yearly’ cycle of 367.5 days (7x 52.5 days or 7×1260 hours)
Seven lines of fifteen days, one hundred five perfect 360 degree squares, signifying the circuit of 15 weekly Sabbaths, 360 hours, and the 90 week days, 2160 hours, composes The Pattern (ha’ta’benith’) and The Banner (‘ha’Nēs).
That which is equal sets The everlasting Standard, and takes measure of all things unequal.
As it was, as it is, and as it shall be. Amen

  10. Consider the Continental Shelf as the original pre-deluge coastline. If the Deluge was one of ice from space, such as frozen debris from a perturbed moon of Jupiter or Saturn, then given the subsequent 500 foot rise in sea level, as well as the ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland, this additional weight would cause the orbit of the Earth to increase its circumference by an extra five 1/4 days. Note that existing rivers lead onto the Shelves, and appear to meander across the sea bed to its edges, even those into the Arctic Ocean, suggesting a relatively recent geological event. Look at other deluge stories from around the World, and consider the Younger Dryas destruction of the Megabeasts.

  11. It’s a Young Earth After All. –
In the beginning, a day was 24 hours, a month was 30 days, and a year was 360 days.
This is my simplistic explanation of the answer:
As the Earth’s rotation began to slow down, probably because of the curse on sin and the effect of the Genesis flood, days slowly grew longer, so that after 6,000 years, we have added 5 days to the year, creating the demand for modern calendars to accommodate them.
    You’re welcome!
